" They had just finished eating when suddenly Nancy sat straight up in her chair.
''What's the matter?' Helen asked her.
Nancy was staring to the dinning-room door toward the stairway in the hall. Then she turned to
Miss Flora. 'Did you leave a radio on in your bedroom?'
'Why , no.' 'Did you Aunt Rosemary?' 'No. Neither mother nor I turned our radios on this morning. Why do-' She stopped speaking, for now all of them could distinctly hear music coming from the second floor."

Edward Stratemeyer, a writer and publisher of childrens books, had many exciting ideas, but couldnt seem to write them all. He hired writers that he called ghosts to bring his stories to life. He gave all of the "ghosts" the name Carolyn Keene.
The first Carolyn Keene was a woman named Mildred Wirt
Benson.She was born in 1905 in Iowa. Her favorite thing to do as a young girl was to read. She would read about anything she could get her hands on. Mildred began to write her first stories in childrens magezines and submitted them for publication. At the age of 13, she won a silver badge for her first published peice called " The Courtesy." After this great acheivment she was thrilled and encouraged to write more.
She graduated from high school early and went to colledge. She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Iowa with a masters degree in journalism. Mildred began working for Stratemeyer while she was getting her masters. The first Nancy Drew book Stratemeyer asked her to write is called "The Secret of the Old Clock." She also wrote "The Bungalow Mystery" and "The Hidden Staircase."
Benson later on wrote 112 childrens books and a numerous short stories. She passed away at the age of 96 in 2002. She did many interesting activities during her lifetime. She was a pilot, amateur archaeologist, and adventurer much like Nancy Drew herself.
